Sweet Potato Cafe is brand-spanking new. So new, in fact, that I was the first to order the spinach tortellini salad - a surprisingly filling meal.
The restaurant, owned by chef Karen Patton (the restaurant's head chef is Georgia Pollard) is located directly across from ART Station, so it's positioned to become a go-to spot after an event. It's not a huge eating place, but it's got a very easy and comfortable feel, with its warm wood floors, deep red walls in the main dining room, and softer yellow in an adjacent dining area, which includes a floral couch and yellow side chairs. Looks like a good place to sit and chat with friends over coffee or tea.
It's no coincidence that Sweet Potato Cafe feels like a home; its a 1930s house that got a big renovation to become what it is today.
The menu is chock-full of -- you guessed it -- sweet potato dishes, including loaded sweet potatoes (the types are everyday, veggie and plain, and served with mixed green salad and house vinaigrette); sweet potato hummus with pita chips and sweet potato fries (both appetizers, or AKA "starters"); sweet potato, corn and black bean hash; and sweet potato shepherd's pie.
We ordered the yummy corn nuggets with spicy "boom boom sauce" as a starter (the restaurant was out of the hummus at the time). I got my sweet potato fix by pretty much devouring the fries that went with my companions' meals, the oven roasted turkey breast panini, which they both enjoyed.
I was very tempted to get the sweet potato shepherd's pie, but I decided to try the soup of the day (a creamy, delicious, slightly sweet butternut squash) and the spinach tortellini salad. The portion size for the salad was pretty large; I wasn't expecting that. But it was a pleasant surprise, since I had something to nibble on later that evening and lunch the next day.
The turkey breast panini came with apple-wood bacon, ciabatta, tomato, goat cheese, and avocado ranch (one person at my table got it with mozzarella instead).
I wish I'd had time to try the desserts: of course, there was the sweet potato pie with fresh whipped cream, or egg nog pound cake with chocolate syrup. Next time, definitely.
So, Sweet Potato Cafe is off to a very good start. You don't have to be crazy about sweet potatoes to stop in and pay a visit to this newest addition to the area.
