Brookwood Gains Another National Merit Scholar
The National Merit Scholarship Program named a number of additional winners for funding, and one of those attends a Snellville high school.
Drew A. Vander Wood, who recently graduated from Brookwood High School, is a recent winner in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Wood was added to a previous list of four other Brookwood students who were named in June as finalists. Woods, who ran track for the Broncos, plans to study biochemistry at Georgia Tech this fall.
He was one of 60 additional National Merit winners from Georgia named in July.
The awarded college-sponsored scholarships are worth $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Students received the scholarship based on their high school academic performance.
Scholarship winners were selected by each sponsoring college or university from among the finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program who were planning to attend their institution.
This year, 197 higher education institutions have underwritten Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program.
With the additional winners named in July, the total number of National Merit Scholars grows to approximately 8,100 students. Scholarships totaled more than $35 million.
