Current Snellville Carmike Unaffected by New Complex

The new Carmike Cinema complex will be built across from the Avenue Webb Gin.

Carmike Cinemas announced Feb. 28 that construction will begin soon on a new Carmike Cinemas complex in Snellville.

Residents sent in emails and comments to Patch concerning the current Carmike Cinema, located at 905 Scenic Hwy #6000, fearing that it would become another vacant building in town. However, Terrell Mayton, Director of Marketing for Carmike, told Snellville Patch that "our existing Snellville location will continue to serve our guests."

Jon Davis, city manager, confirmed that the complex will be on the property right after The Avenue, if you're headed toward Lawrenceville on Scenic Highway. That property is outside of Snellville city limits, but the city is in negotiations to annex that portion of town, including the entirety of The Avenue and the new cinema complex.

The city limits of Snellville currently end around North Road, just past Lowes.

The new Carmike 13 will be an anchor tenant of a 43-acre multi-use development, and management hopes to attract top-tier shops, restaurants and commercial properties.

Why didn't they just tear down the old Carmike and rebuild it? It's in a great area with a lot of traffic. I pass Carmike when we go to the theater in Lawrenceville or the Tavern (served food which is cheaper than regular theaters) Last time I went to Carmike a few months ago it smelled like vomit, it was honestly nasty smelling. The seats are old and nasty too. They need to keep a usher in the theaters so if there is a problem he can ask the offending person to leave or call for security. Again we go to the Tavern b/c they always have ushers in the theater and the food is better and cheaper. It would be nice if we didn't have to travel to Suwanee but I refuse to pay all that money to watch a movie in a theater that sinks and so out dated .

I am praying there is a Trader Joe's coming to the Snellville area. I noticed yesterday that work was being done at the old Border's location. Does the Snellville Patch know what is going on there?

Why would Gwinnett Coutny agree with the city of Snellville to annex the entire Avenues and the new 40 plus acres next door on Scenic. Isn't being in the city limits means that those stores in the Avenues would pay a higher taxes?

I honestly don't see myself going to the old Carmike when the new one is built. I think everyone else will agree. It smells bad, the screens and seating areas are too small, and just isn't all that great. Same with the Regal on 78 (plus that one has had some scary-looking people at night). My wife and I usually go out to AMC Colonial 18 or Discover Mills, or out to the MOG Regal for 3D movies.
