Gwinnett BOC to Consider Gwinnett Police/Fire Vehicle Purchases and Homeland Security Grant
The commissioners hold their first Febuary 2013 meetings on Tuesday.
The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners plans to consider some financial expenditures for public safety and emergency response items at their regular work session meeting Tuesday (February 5).
The work session is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the regular business meeting set for 3 p.m.
According to the work session agenda, Gwinnett Police are in line to accept a grant of about $108,000 from the Department of Homeland Security.
Also, an additional $3 million is being requested by Support Services to purchase law enforcement and emergency vehicles to avoid a 2014 model year price increase.
According to county documents, the Homeland Security grant would be used to purchase such items as helmets, face shields and portable lighting items for first responders. Also, technical and tutorial items are on the list.
The $3 million request is in addition to the $3.6 million already budgeted for vehicle purchases. The new amount would be used to purchase "new and replacement vehicles" for Gwinnett Police, Gwinnett Fire and the Gwinnett Sheriff's Department. The amount would be funded by the Capital Vehicles and Fleet Equipment Fund, according to county documents.
Official votes will take place at the business meeting later Tuesday, scheduled for 3 p.m. That agenda would be available by the time that meeting begins.

Finally a much needed upgrade to our brave first responders mobile capabilities. I hope they allocate $$ towards technology advancements e.g. Handsfree voice activated communication devices, thumb print coded firearms that can only be fired by the assigned officer, protective gear and assistance, training and awareness programs that provide an out/in let for officers exhibiting signs of PTSD, alcohol abuse, spousal abuse and or depression. While I have a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude for the service of our men & women in the military I pray we don't forget what the men and women in law enforcement deal with everyday of their careers. Thank you for your undying, unnoticed, under appreciated dedication & commitment to public service.
