Gwinnett Sheriff Butch Conway Endorses Tommy Hunter in Runoff Election
Sheriff Conway Endorses Tommy Hunter for District Three County Commissioner in the Runoff Election August 21st.
Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway has placed his support behind candidate Tommy Hunter for District Three County Commissioner and had the following to say:
"Tommy Hunter is a solid conservative who will be responsive to Gwinnett’s citizens. I urge you to vote for Tommy on Tuesday.” The Sheriff went on to say, “You can make a difference."
Hunter is grateful to have the recent endorsement and stated the following, “I have always had the greatest respect for Sheriff Conway. He’s been a driving force for Conservative causes in Gwinnett for many years and earning his support is a great honor for me.”
He went on to say, “I look forward to serving the citizens of District Three with an open door policy and respect for my constituents that will make all who have given their support to my campaign proud.”
Hunter lives in Buford with his wife Judith and their two children. He runs his own company and also served as a County Planning Commissioner. The family attends Harmony Baptist church where he has served as a Sunday school teacher since 2007.

I like Butch but this won't keep me from voting for Mike. I'm disappointed that this even happened. Not sure what would motivate a sitting Sheriff to endorse anyone in a commissioner's race.

The sheriffs' budget is the responsiblity of the board of commissioners, therefore it is called politics and self interest.Mike probably gave him a hard time about his budget.
Here is a money saving idea.If Mike wins and as a payback he could recommend the elimination and consolidation of the sheriff's department into the Gwinnett Police Dept.Think of how much money this would save the taxpayers .The elimination of this antiquated concept...the Sheriffs Department.Perhaps this could also apply to Fulton,Clayton and Dekalb as well.

I respect Butch too much to go there. I do not believe that Mike would vote with a personal grudge. The board pulled funding for an Archer project over Mike exposing the inflated prices the county was paying for land in the "land deals". So I don't believe he would do it to someone else. If there were true savings by consolidating the Sheriff and GCPD they would have already done it. Not only here but everywhere in the US. As far as Hunter goes, I've heard good things about him and a little bad (probably false). I know Mike personally and know his integrity. That's why i'm voting for him. District 3 is lucky not to have a clearly bad choice.

What's respect got to do with it...I thought all Republicans wanted to cut government and save the taxpayers money, lets' start by eliminating the sheriffs department

The endorsement is meaningless. If Conway was really serious why endorse at the last minute instead of weeks ago. In addition, endorsements mean little. If they did, remember that John Linder endorsed Mike's opponent in 2004 runoff and Mike won 58-41....and sorry Butch...you are no John Linder.
Meaningless.

Financial advice coming from George who says that our National Debt will take care of itself. No thanks.
I don't think Advil is strong enough to help George's condition.

What I said was that the national debt short term is not the problem we should be debating. This statement was made in the context of discussions/posts about the problem of debt. The problem is lack of demand and unemployment.I would also add reform of the tax code including eliminating the Bush tax cuts on those making over $250,000 per year. .Solve these three problems and the national debt will start to decrease. We can start to create the solutions to these problems by spending more not less especially on infrastructure.

I have always liked Butch Conway - his contribution to animal welfare is second to none. I thought it was just a rumor that he wanted to consolidate the sheriffs department with the GCPD. So is he going to put the GCPD Chief in charge or himself? A power play? He needs to stick with what he does well and leave the running of the GCPD alone. Once again I guess I'll be voting against someone rather than voting for someone. I don't want to eliminate either department. I'm very disappointed to learn the rumor about Butch is true. :(

The elimination of the Sheriffs departments in urban areas would be a major reform and a savings to the taxpayers. But it would be opposed by the politically powerful Sheriffs Association and would probably require a constitutional amendment. If you look at the history of urban sheriffs departments ,you always see scandal and corruption.Clayton county is a good example.Recently, didn't we have a problem with the sheriffs' personnel following the Gwinnett county commission chairman, to try to get him on a drunk driving charge?Everything should be on the table for government savings and not just cutting teachers and increasing class sizes and this includes the sacred cows like the Sheriff's office.

Thank you Mr.Wilson for your reply. I've always been a supporter of the GCPD, well since I moved to Gwinnett in 1987. If one has to go for the sake of taxes I'd much rather it be the sheriffs department.
