Meet Christine Hoffer: House District 93 Candidate

Christine "Tina" Hoffer is the only Republican campaigning to represent the newly formed district.

Christine "Tina" Hoffer, 56, has lived in Georgia for most of her life and has lived in this district for almost 12 years.

As a nurse with 34 years of experience, she has worked in high-intensity, difficult situations. Her problem-solving skills were forged quickly, and her empathy for people was formed as she worked not only at local hospitals, including Eastside Medical Center, but also took short- and long-term medical mission trips to countries like Thailand and Nigeria.

She had the opportunity to work alongside Nigerian student nurses for 10 months while she was still in nursing school, and she ministered to Cambodian refugees while in Thailand.

Her husband of 15 years, Mike Hoffer, works for the nonprofit World Relief in nearby Stone Mountain. Together, they regularly help refugees settle into the Atlanta area.

Reaching Out to the Community

For the past year and a half, Tina Hoffer has worked in the home health field with a focus on elder care. She has been employed by ResCare Home Care, based in Athens, Ga.

Hoffer graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Emory University in 1978 and completed her graduate degree in nursing in 1987.

As the homeowner's association president in her Brandon Lakes neighborhood, she gained experience in community involvement and leadership.

“We worked creatively with a limited budget,” she said, “and managed the needs of the neighborhood.”

Elizabeth Witherspoon, a friend of Hoffer's who worked with her as an officer at the homeowner's association, said Hoffer was the first neighbor to greet her when she moved into the neighborhood. They have known each other for seven years.

According to Witherspoon, Hoffer is a very caring and giving person.

“She is an honest woman with a great deal of integrity,” she said.

Rallying Conservative Votes

Hoffer made the decision to run when she realized there was no Republican representation for District 93, a newly formed district covering Lithonia, Loganville, Snellville and Stone Mountain. The Democratic winner of the July 31 primary will face her in November, as she was the only Republican to qualify.

“I just felt like this year in particular, the constituents needed a conservative option,” she said.

She hopes to rally the conservative vote and give those citizens the opportunity to express themselves. Although she is new to politics and only recently began to campaign, she attends Gwinnett County Republican meetings, the Conservative Women of North Atlanta and Gwinnett County Republican Women meetings.

She wants to promote responsible use of government funds and increase funds for public education. And, because so many residents of District 93 commute long distances, she wants to address the traffic situation.

“I am not in favor of TSPLOST,” she said, “because I don't think it benefits Gwinnett.”

She believes a more organized master plan is necessary for traffic resolution in the metro area. The way the roads are designed now, according to Hoffer, just isn't practical and is clearly not working.

She also hopes to work toward reducing the tax burden in a way that would stimulate small business.

Margaret Gardner, a Hoffer supporter and friend for more than 20 years, said that Hoffer is a “doer.” She and Hoffer attend church together at Anchor Church in Grayson.

“She's great at organizing and being the impetus behind change,” she said.

Gardner believes there is a real consistency to Hoffer.

“If there's a need, and she feels like she can do it,” Gardner said, “she does that. She's a very hard worker.”

For more information on Christine "Tina" Hoffer, the public is invited to a meet and greet at her Snellville home, 4025 Gail Lee Terrace) on July 14.
