As Gwinnett’s Class of 2012 gets ready to walk across the stage and receive their high school diploma, 11 graduating seniors have learned that their college tuition will be paid in full for their entire college career, courtesy of the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program.
One of the 11 students is Shiloh High School senior Javier Prusky Grinberg, who plans to pursue acting at Syracuse University. His high academic performance earned him the coveted Gates Millennium honor.
Other schools with winning students were: Collins Hill High; Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology; Meadowcreek High; Mill Creek High; Mountain View High; Norcross High; North Gwinnett High; and Peachtree Ridge High.
The Gwinnett County seniors are part of a group of only 1,000 students from across the country selected for the "2012 Class of Gates Millennium Scholars." A total of 88 Georgia students are part of this group.
In addition of the full scholarship for undergraduate work, the Gates Millennium
Scholars also qualify for selected graduate and doctoral work.
Representatives from the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program will visit
Gwinnett County Public Schools on Monday, May 14, 2012, to congratulate
the 11 local recipients. District leaders will be part of the celebratory event, as
the school district salutes this year’s class of Gates Millennium Scholars.
The event will take place 3 p.m., at the school district’s Instructional Support Center, 437 Old Peachtree Road, NW in Suwanee.
About the process:
To earn a scholarship, seniors participate in a lengthy and competitive application process. Honorees are selected based on a review of their
academic records, community involvement and extracurricular activities, and their families’ need for financial assistance.
About the program:
Gates Millennium Scholarship Program is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and it is administered by the United Negro College Fund. It's focus is to promote academic excellence for outstanding minority low-income students. It was established in 1999.
