Snellville's David and Elaine Payne Train and Race for a Cause
The couple takes part in marathons, half marathons, triathlons, cycling events and hiking adventures while fundraising to help the fight against blood cancer
Snellville resident David Payne started his journey with 'Team In Training' -- the country’s largest charity-based sports endurance training program -- by taking a 111-mile bike ride in Tucson, Ariz., back in 1999. He wanted physical activity that involved being outdoors while making a difference in the lives of others.
His wife, Elaine was inspired to get involved with Team In Training (TNT) at an information meeting. She then began her path with TNT by running a marathon in Bermuda in 2000.
Together, the couple has completed 27 events with TNT as either participants or coaches. David rode 100 miles around Lake Tahoe as a member of the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride Cycling Team in 2011, and in the summer of 2012, he was a riding member of the Georgia Chain Gang, an eight person cycling team that participated in the 3,000-mile cycling competition called the Race Across America. It took the team about six and a half days to complete their journey.
Elaine has competed in three different TNT sports, making her a Triple Crown Award winner. She was a member of the 2007 TNT Tugaloo Triathlon Team, and in November 2009, she was a member of the cycling team that rode the 'Cruisin’ in the Country', a 100-mile bike ride in southeast Georgia.
Most recently, Elaine successfully completed the Publix Georgia Half Marathon right here in Atlanta with TNT in March 2012.
The Paynes estimate that they have raised $34K for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society throughout all of their events. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ® (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.
When asked what motivates them to keep taking part in Team In Training, David and Elaine agree that meeting the people involved, helping find a cure, and improving the quality of life of patients and their families keeps them doing more TNT events.
Team In Training is currently recruiting teams for summer season events including the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride at Lake Tahoe in June and the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½ Marathon in California in June.
