It's the holidays, and if you'd like to find a way to help others, look no further than your own backyard.
Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry needs your help this holiday season, as it prepares to help hundreds of families through these especially tough times.
Here are two initiatives that the community can help with:
Give Hunger the Boot:
Newly elected Councilman Dave Emanuel mentioned this program at the city's regular meeting on Nov. 14.
Give Hunger the Boot is a public awareness campaign that works with businesses to develop fundraisers that specifically help charities that provide assistance to families in need.
Texas Roadhouse in Snellville is kicking off the first event in this initiative with a special gift card program. When patrons purchase a gift card -- through this Friday, November 18 -- 10 percent of the sale of the card will be donated to buy items for the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op.
In addition, Emanuel said the public can expect to see other such events happening around town, particularly in 2012.
For more information, contact Emanuel through the initiative's website, or contact Southeast Gwinnett Co-op at 770-985-5229.
The nonprofit is planning to offer small gift bags to each child that comes to their doors between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It expects to serve 800 - 1000 children with this program.
Gifts bags will include: a Bible or Bible story book, a small toy, personal care items (toothbrush, paste, etc.) and candy. And, the nonprofit needs the community's help to fill these bags.
Suggested items to donate include: Hot Wheels, crayons and coloring books, sidewalk chalk, Play-Doh, Uno cards, lip gloss, puzzles, hair accessories, Nerf balls, stationary, colored pens, Stuffed animals, or other small items.
Bags are needed for boys and girls in age groups: 0-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-11 years, 12 years – high school age. Southeast Gwinnett Co-op ask that items be age appropriate and safe.
In addition to donating items, the community can also donate complete bags earmarked for Christmas.
Other and General Donations:
During November and December, Five Spot Frozen Yogurt in Snellville also is taking $1 off your purchase of $4 or more with the donation of a can of food. All food collected will be donated to the Co-op.
To make general donations to Southeast Gwinnett Co-op, the public may do so in person, online or by mail. For more information on this, click here to be taking to the donation page.
The mailing address for the Co-op is: 1200 Athens Highway, Grayson, GA, 30017.
Additional food items such as: soup, rice, dried beans, fuit, grits, baking mix and crackers are always needed.
