Upscale Carmike Theater Coming to Snellville

The theater will feature 13 screens and seating for 2,800 guests; BIGD auditoriums will feature screens that are three stories tall.

Carmike Cinemas announced Feb. 28 that construction will begin soon on a new Carmike Cinemas complex in Snellville.

The new Carmike 13 will be an anchor tenant of a 43-acre multi-use development to be constructed at the corner of Scenic Highway 124 near Webb Gin House Road, according to a recent statement.  The development will be across from The Avenue, with the goal of attracting top-tier shops, restaurants and commercial properties.

The theatre will feature stadium style seating, with high back rocking luxury seats with retractable arm rests. The rooms will be equipped with wall-to-wall screens, as well as DLP Digital projection and digital sound.

On top of that, the theatre will have an upscale lobby and multiple concession areas featuring Coca-Cola Freestyle drink centers.

“We’re providing the ultimate entertainment experience that centerpieces largeformat DIGITAL with bigger screens, bigger sound, and luxurious theatre seating for cutting-edge presentation and the definitive enjoyment of our audiences,” said Carmike President and CEO David Passman.

The “BIGD” auditorium features a wall-to-wall screen measuring over 81-feet wide and three stories tall. To further enhance the experience, the custom QSC DIGITAL audio system is tuned to a 7.1 speaker array with 16 channels and the ability to upgrade to 11.1 surround sound. The audio system is a revolution in sound technology, according to Director of Marketing Terrell Mayton, with DIGITAL audio processing supported by quad-amplified, 4-way speakers and 21-inch subwoofers.

A smaller Carmike is currently located off of Scenic Highway.

I'm so excited about this new hot spot. I also have mixed feelings about how it will impact Regals business and jobs.

If Regal wants to compete, they could upgrade their current location into a movie tavern!!

There's no room for expansion at Regals current location. Any hopes for a Tavern would mean Regal would have to turn to it's investors and share holders to consider building a new theatre. Considering the acquisition of Hollywood Theaters I don't see how they might even be willing to move in that direction. Anyway, I'll miss Discover Mills.

this is a great thing BUT isn't that outside the city limits of Snellville? Also, does this mean that they will be closing the one in Snellville?

Patti, I'm double-checking that. The press release that was sent to me said Snellville, but I know The Avenue is split down the middle. If it is Lawrenceville, the city is planning on annexing it anyway.

The Regal Theater needs to open one up like the Movie Tavern or Studio Grill concept.

I'd be interested if they will be closing the one on 78 also. I am also curious about Whole Foods. Are they still considering Snellville for one of their stores? Now that would be awesome.

Crystal - several years back, I gave Tom Witts some information on a theatre group that builds the old vintage "play-house" style theatres, complete with a restaurant-grill inside. This was before the "movie tavern" concept hit Gwinnett. I thought Tom said that Regal had expressed interest in revitalizing their existing site. Seems that this move by Carmike may raise that very bar! A movie tavern concept would be their most savvy move in order to compete in the movie market.

Regal....Movie Tavern...now that'd be great! However, Regals numbers are not looking too good and they are yet to display the Trump business territorial spirit that will engage its encroaching competition. I don't even think being at the top is a priority. Nonetheless I love the area and look forward to upscale affordable businesses moving in. I also saw a sign on 78 of an indoor gun range, how cool is that folks!?!! :-)

In my opinion, Regal's numbers (at least for the Snellville location) might be due to the cramped seating, tiny dingy theaters, and lack of staff. but that's just my opinion.

Where is the indoor gun range moving in on 78?!? : )

What corner. Auto tec or poblanos? If not across from Aldi

If this new Carmike is not inside Snellville city limits then they ought to be able to solve the annoying problem of having to split the movies "mutually exclusively" with the Snellville Regal. Currently, both theaters advertise for movies that they may not even being showing at their theater. Considering that management themselves are confused and unsure as to what will be showing next week, just imagine how confusing this is to customers.

Personally, I prefer the Carmike because they are cheaper...and they ARE cheaper because they run a tighter ship and save on unnecessary costs like over-staffing. I look forward to the day that the Regal converts into a "movie tavern" and puts all that labor to use busing tables and washing dishes.

We definitely need more entertainment options in Snellville. Glad to see this, and I do hope the city of Snellville can annex it so Snellville can gain the tax revenue as that section grows. Traffic will get a bit crazier I'm sure, but we'll gain a lot of jobs which are greatly needed.

I like the idea of the Movie Tavern. There used to be one in Buckhead in the 70s. It was very popular. Glad to see the idea gaining popularity again.

My wife and I saw "Lincoln" at the Movie Tavern at Northlake Mall. It was a nice experience.

Sounds like a really good thing, my concern is the impact that is going to have on traffic, especially at an already congested intersection

Me too, Josh. I have lived here all my life (this is part of my grandfather's farm) I am especially concerned about the added traffic for this area. I live just off Webb Gin House and it is already very congested!

I am suprised there has been no movement on this project. Has the Patch received any information or know when we should anticipate development to begin?

Thank You.
