Jack's Produce

(Contributed by Enid Grigg)

Jack’s Fruit and Vegetable Stand, located on Zoar Church Road behind the Centerville Walmart, is open from March 15 through the day before Thanksgiving. Every morning Jack makes a trip to get fresh produce at the Atlanta Farmers Market in Forest Park. He also grows greens: collards, mustard and turnip during the fall and winter months and even though the stand is not open, he takes orders from his large clientele who are regular customers.

He and his son maintain a large free-range chicken farm at his son’s house where he houses over 200 chickens of several varieties. The chickens are fed a natural diet, without antibiotics, and are allowed to run free. He sells their organic eggs for $3.50 a dozen suggesting to the customer to bring back the empty carton so he can keep his cost down.

He offers local honey brought in when the bees are cooperating, lately they have been slow to produce, but he usually sells over 100 gallons per year. Jack has jams and jellies from a farm in North Carolina all natural, containing no preservatives, Jack says, ‟just like your grandma used to make”.

His produce is a work of art and he takes great pride in providing the community a resource many of us wouldn’t have the time to drive to. His prices are comparable to local stores, if not lower, and his produce is fresher because of his daily trips to the Atlanta Farmers Market.
