Get Out: A Look at What to Do This Weekend

Yard sale to benefit mission work, fitness, bluegrass music and more. Fun times.

1. Snellville Christian Church Yard Sale and Fundraiser

When/Where: Saturday, May 14, 7 a.m.- 4 p.m., Snellville Christian Church, 2485 Scenic Highway S., Snellville

Why Go: Here's your way to do something good, while also finding some unique finds for you, your friends and family, or your home. The local Snellville church is hosting a yard sale to benefit Pillar of Legacy. Organized in 2010, mission is to transform lives and impact communities in southern Africa to commit themselves fully to God. Founders Daniel and Amber Lufiyele, who are also members of Snellville Christian Church, are currently doing mission work in Zimbabwe. The two are planning to start an education center there.

Pricing: Free to browse. Prices of goods vary, but donations are accepted.

2. Snellville Family Fitness Tournament and Wellness Fair (Due to rain, the event has been moved to May 21.)

When/Where: Saturday, May 14, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.,Β  Briscoe Park, 2500 Sawyer Parkway, Snellville.

Why Go: As a late celebration for Mother's Day, Families Get Fit is having a day of sports competitions and activities to include all family members. Major competitions families can battle against are sand volleyball, tennis, kickball and more, and less competitive activities include zumba, yoga, races, martial arts and more. Cash prizes and medals will be awarded to the winners of the big league competitions, and badges will be given to all participants. Get ready to get fit!

Pricing: Advance registration is up to $10 per person, and same-day registration is up to $15 per person. For specific prices and for more information, click here. If the weather doesn't cooperate, a rain date is scheduled for May 21.

3. Bluegrass Music Festival

When/Where: Saturday, May 14, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Stone Mountain Village, Main Street, Stone Mountain.

Why Go: Stone Mountain Village is popping this Saturday with an old-fashioned street party. Tons of food (including barbecue from the Stone Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 449), a classic car show, fireworks at sundown, a pottery show, art sales, and music and dancing on Main Street line the ticket of festivities. There will be tons for the kids to do, too, from jumping in a bouncy house, balloon art a bubble station and more.

Pricing: Free.

4. '80s and '90s Hits Chill, Mingle and Dance Night

When/Where: Saturday, May 14, 8 p.m.-2 a.m., Thirsty's Bar and Grill, 3907 Burns Road, Lilburn.

Why Go: Relive the Madonna and Michael Jackson era from the '80s and '90s with Thirsty's blast-from-the-past dance night this weekend. Created by the local dance meet-up group Dancing4fun, the event is sure to bring some 20th century moves to the dance floor, especially for those whose wonder years are in this time.

Pricing: There will be no cover all night.

5. AARF Pet Central Volunteer Day

When/Where: Sunday, May 15, noon-4 p.m., AARF Pet Central, 6570 James B. Rivers Drive, Stone Mountain.

Why Go: Come back to work Monday knowing that you did something good this weekend: After AARF Pet Central, a homeless pet shelter that had planned to open next month, , they're having a volunteer day to help get it back on its feet. Through the community, they hope to replace the $5,000 worth of stolen pet supplies, computer equipment and other items, so lend a helping hand to those who need it.

Pricing: Email Melanie (melanie@aarfatlanta.org) in advance if you know you'll be volunteering. Donations will be accepted, too, at the site and on the AARF website.
