Know Before You Go: Restaurant Health Inspections

Restaurant inspections in and around Snellville for the month of July.

Results of recent Gwinnett County restaurant inspections in Snellville by East Metro Public Health with a synopsis of deficiencies found by the inspector. These are reports over the past week.

Name: Atlantic Buffet Sushi and Grill
Location: 2059 Scenic Highway, Suite 117
Score: 82/B
Previous Scores: 90/A (5/02/2012), 78/C (4/26/2012)
Deficiencies observed: Cold-held potentially hazardous foods not maintained below 41oF; no time controls/documentation in place. Potentially hazardous food items such as raw shrimp, beef, chicken, pork, and garlic and oil in the back prep cooler and white fish in the sushi cooler were found to be above 41 degrees. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, potentially hazardous food prepared and held in the establishment for more than 24 hours not clearly marked to indicate the date by which the food must be consumed, sold, or discarded. Several pans of mac and cheese, crab casserole, and cooked chicken in the walk in cooler and sliding door cooler were found prepared and held over 24 hours in the facility with no date marks present at the time of inspection. The person in charge placed date marks on these items. If found to be out of compliance on the next routine inspection the food service permit may be suspended.

Name: Burger King
Location: 2357 Main St. E.

Deficiencies observed:   Several open beverages in cups are stored in the prep area, One of the employees is chewing gum while working.  Cold-held potentially hazardous foods not maintained below 41oF; no time controls/documentation in place: All of the potentially hazardous foods on the right hand side of the walk-in cooler are not being maintained at 41F or less (cheese, bulk cream, thin-sliced ham, country ham, raw bacon, ice cream mix, and liquid egg). 

Name:  Captain D's
Location:  2637 Main St. W.
Score:  100/A
Previous Scores:  79/C (7/10/2012), 99/A (05/29/2012)
Deficiencies observed: Bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat food was observed when an employee used bare hands to wrap baked potatoes in foil. The tray of potatoes was pulled from the microwave when the reheating was finished. The manager discarded the potatoes and the employee has been terminated during the inspection.

Name:  Chili's
Location:  1350 Scenic Hwy. 
Score:  99/A

Deficiencies observed: Food preparation/dispensing utensils not stored with their handles above the top of the food and the container. Utensils in the shredded cheese and green onions in the cooler were found with handles stored down inside the food containers. The person in charge removed the utensils and was advised to store utensils inside food containers so that the handles are above the surfaces of the food to help avoid possible hand contact with the food items. 

Name:  Domino's Pizza
Location:  3400 Centerville Hwy.

Deficiencies observed: Employee beverage stored on the sauce prep table.  Employee is eating while standing in the make-line and pizza packaging area. Cold-held potentially hazardous foods not maintained below 41oF; no time controls/documentation in place: Multiple food items on the top of the pizza station are not being maintained at proper temperature (White American cheese, salami, and cheese strips). 

Name:  Enzo's Pizza
Location:  3070 Hwy. 78
Score:  75/C

Deficiencies observed:  Equipment not cleaned with adequate frequency: The upper chute of the ice machine in the back of the kitchen has pink and black mold growth. Salted butter, chicken base, and lasagna all in the salad prep cooler are not being held at the proper temperatures.  Parcooked chicken wings have not been cooled down to 70F within the first two hours of cooling. Spaghetti noodles and rigatoni are being held in the residential refrigerator for more than 7 days.  Consecutive observations of the same violations may lead to permit suspension.  Follow-up inspection required to be completed within the next 10 days (on or before July 23rd). 

Name:  Flames Sports Bar and Grill
Location:  2671 Centerville Hwy. 
Score:  90/A

Deficiencies observed: Two buckets of sour cream and a bulk package of shredded cheese are not being maintained at the proper temperature inside the walk-in cooler. 

Name:  Kentucky Fried Chicken
Location:  2662 W. Main St.
Score:  85/B
Previous Scores:  95/A (02/02/2012), 91/A (08/08/2011)
Deficiencies observed: Metal racks and food pans are observed with food debris and residue remaining after being cleaned and stored on the shelf next to the corner prep sink. The internal cavity of the ice machine is unclean with an accumulation of mold growth at the upper chute.  The two commercial microwaves in the facility are not functioning. 

Name:  O'Charley's
Location: 2049 Hwy. 124 
Score: 83/B

Deficiencies observed: Potentially hazardous foods not properly cooled by effective methods, the light above the pasta station was not properly shielded at the time of inspection.

Name: Philly Connection
Location:  2228 W. Main St.
Score:  80/B
Previous Scores:  90/A (05/08/2012), 64/U (04/13/2012)
Deficiencies observed: Black, to-go containers in the kitchen are stored facing upward AND stored without their original plastic wrapping. There were roach eggs and the segmented body of a dead roach observed on the internal surfaces of the containers. Salami and Black Forest ham are not labeled. Pepperoni slices in the prep cooler are not labeled with the correct date of prep. The pepperoni looks dull and not fresh. There is a Wednesday date label on the lid of the container.  Live roach observed crawling around the manager's desk (in the kitchen). Dead roach observed on the lid of a hot sauce container. Several remnants of roaches such as egg sacks are observed on exposed food containers in the kitchen. Unwrapped, sandwich bun waste was placed into an old postal service tote. Manager stated that it is for his birds at home. However this exposed bread and crumbs are providing meals for pests in the restaurant. Thoroughly clean the restaurant before calling Northwest Exterminating. The technician noted "food found under all cooking and prep surfaces, sinks, and freezers".

Name: Super Wings and Philly
Location: 3035 Centerville Hwy, Suite 14
Score: 99/A

Deficiencies observed: Cleaver handle in contact with mushrooms in the prep cooler, ice scoop handle in contact with ice in the bin, flour and salt handles in contact with foods in storage containers.

Name: Taste Makers Food
Location: 2991 Everson Rd.
Score: 93/A
Previous Scores: 100/A (06/12/2012)
Deficiencies observed: Potentially hazardous foods not thawed under an approved method. Raw beef not thawed using an approved method. Beef was thawing at room temperature.
