National Praise for Snellville Farmers' Market

In its second year, venue landed the third-place spot for top farmers' markets across the nation in its category, according to final results of the American Farmland Trust contest.

The Farmers' Market had a final tally of 2,619 votes in the large-market category, which included markets with more than 55 vendors. New Braunfels Farm to Market in New Braunfels, Texas, finished with 4,220 votes, and the No. 1 farmers' market in the large-market group was Las Cruces Farmers & Crafts Market in Las Cruces, N.M., with 5,024 votes.

Snellville moved from the medium-sized category to the large category a few weeks ago. If the city's market had stayed in the medium-sized category, it would have won a No. 1 spot.

Still, the Snellville Farmers' Market was the state's most favorite market, with every other state farmers' market in the contest trailing far behind: Riverside Farmers Market with 616, Peachtree Road Farmers Market with 397, East Atlanta Village Farmers Market with 207 and Marietta Square Farmers Market with 173.

The contest, which ended midnight on Aug. 31, 2011, was hosted by the American Farmland Trust, in an effort to promote farm and ranch land throughout the United States. In addition, the trust works with communities to create sustainability for farms and on public policy.

At the end of the contest, the top small, medium, large, and boutique, farmers market win the title of this year's “America’s Favorite Farmers Market. Winners will receive No Farms No Food totebags, a feature article on the award winning food website Epicurious.com, and other prizes.
