High Demand, Low Resources at SE Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry

The co-op is running low on donations, see why and how you can help.

At , Snellville Patch heard that the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry was running low on supplies and needed assistance. We emailed , director of the program, to see exactly what was going on.

Here is Drake's response to us:

"Summer is always a struggle for food banks. The increased need caused by a lack of resources for children who participate in the free lunch program through GCPS when school is in session, along with decreased donations, lead to a struggle for food banks. This summer, requests for food at the have increased 25 percent. God has proven himself faithful in allowing us to meet this increased need. Truly amazing.

"Last Thursday, we served 81 different families in the four hours that we were open. And, when we opened on Friday, the pace continued.  Quite frankly, we were utterly wiped clean. We prayerfully issued a call for donations. We never fear, for we have seen the Lord show up on our behalf time and time again.

"I am careful to not issue an 'immediate need email' until we are truly in a situation that warrants it. It is a joy for people to come alongside and reach out to others. And, it is a joy to experience the response to our plea.

"We live in a very generous community. So, yes, we need food.

"At the moment, we will be okay for this Thursday and Friday, but we will need continuing donations to serve after that. We have seen that in years past, the need intensifies through the end of August. I believe that this is due to the fact that the beginning of the school year can be quite expensive with supplies, fees, shoes, etc. Folks that were squeaking by will need us until things settle down.

"Our most needed items are cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit, canned vegetables, pasta and sauce, chili, rice, dried beans, toilet tissue, canned milk, crackers, oatmeal, and grits. Other needs include: diapers, condiments, baking supplies, vegetable oil.

"As far as money goes, praise God that we have only had one day without financial assistance all year. And, that day was Monday. We will open this Thursday with funds, though not much."
