Spring Calendar of Programs Released by Marcus Jewish Community Center

Spring break camps, Holocaust Remembrance activities and more events are planned at the center and open to the public.

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta has announced its programs for the remainder of April and May, which are open to the entire community. 

When School is Out, the MJCCA is In!

When:             April 14 - 23
Where:            MJCCA at Zaban Park  (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)
Cost:               Prices vary per camp; Open to non-members; After-care is available for an additional fee.

Details:            Pre-K through 8th grade. MJCCA Day Camps organize fabulous programs for the daya your child's school is closed. The MJCCA offers a varied program filled with exciting, engaging, and safe activities for children during school holidays and teacher work days. Campers enjoy a non-stop day complete with stimulating activities like cooking, swimming, sports, arts & crafts, ropes course, and more.

“Letters to Sala” – Onstage at the MJCCA

When:             April 23 - 27
Where:            MJCCA at Zaban Park (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)
Cost:               $17-23. Open to the community
Details:            Presented in association with Dunwoody Stage Door Players.       

This remarkable story of a young girl's survival during wartime Germany was adapted from the book 'Sala's Gift' and based on a true account.

MJCCA Young Adults on Tap

When:             Thursdays, April 24 and May 22, 7:30 – 10:00 pm
Where:            April 24: Suburban Tap, 1318 Johnson Ferry Rd (East Cobb)

May 22: 5 Seasons Brewing Company, 3655 Old Milton PKWY (Alpharetta)

Cost:                Drinks and food available for purchase.
Details:            Mix & mingle with young Jewish adults from the metro Atlanta area. “Young Adults on

Tap” is an opportunity to socialize, network and just relax with other young adults. Held at some of Atlanta's hippest hangouts, these programs attract a diverse crowd from throughout the community. All are welcome, regardless of religious affiliation or background. Open to the entire community. No RSVP necessary.

Yom HaShoah (Day of Holocaust Remembrance) Community-Wide Observance at the Besser Memorial

When:             Sunday, April 27, 4:00 – 5:00 pm, RAIN OR SHINE.
Where:            The Besser Holocaust Memorial Garden, located on the campus of the Marcus Jewish

Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA), 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody

Cost:                The program is free of charge.

Details:            The entire community is invited to a Yom HaShoah Commemoration at the MJCCA’s

Besser Holocaust Memorial Garden. The commemoration is sponsored by the Atlanta Rabbinical Association, the Consulate General of Israel, and the MJCCA. The Yom HaShoah program will include: The lighting of the Six Torches in memory of the six million people who perished in the Holocaust; a special musical presentation; and remarks from Jim Barfield, author of Boxcars, who draws on his ancestry to tell the story of two young people during World War II.

J-Serve: An International Day of Jewish Youth Service.

When:              Sunday, April 27, 12:30 - 4:00 pm
Who:                Teens, grades 6 - 12

Where:            Various locations across Atlanta

Cost:                The program is free of charge and open to the community.

Details:            Since 2005, J-Serve has been a part of Youth Service America's Global Youth Service Day weekend. In Atlanta, J-Serve is a partnered program, led by the MJCCA, where youth organizations gather to impact more than 300 Atlanta teens with a community-wide day of service. J-Serve provides teens with the opportunity to fulfill the Jewish values ofgemilut chasidim, acts of loving kindness, tzedakah, just and charitable giving, and tikkum olam, the responsibility to repair the world. Across the globe, teens join each other to make their community, and the world, a better place.

Shabbat, Me & Rabbi G at the JCC

When:              Friday, May 2, 5:00 - 6:00 pm

Cost:                Free and open to the community

Details:            Bring your children to enjoy a Shabbat story with author, Galia Sabbag, who will read from her

book, “Shabbat in the Playroom”, followed by songs and blessings with Rabbi Glusman. The Weinstein School Shabbat Dinosaur will also stop by for a visit! Challah and grape juice will be served.

21st Annual Harris Jacobs Dream Run

When:             Sunday, May 4
Where:            MJCCA at Zaban Park (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)
Cost:               Register before April 21, 2014 and pay $25; the fee will increase to $30 after April 21st.

Kids’ 1-Miler fee: $15 / Blonder Walk fee: $15 / Race Day registration fee: $35

Jazz at the JCC presents: The 4th Ward Afro Klezmer Orchestra

When:             May 4, 7:30 pm
Where:            MJCCA at Zaban Park (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)
Cost:               $12-18. Open to the community. Discounts available to students, seniors, and groups.

Details:           This nine-piece klezmer-funk-rock-jazz ensemble performs original compositions and

arrangements, which combine West African rhythms with Eastern European klezmer melodies. They are hailed as one of the most unique and entertaining local live acts in Atlanta.

Yom Haatzmaut - Israel Independence Day Celebration

Details:            Celebrate Israel’s Birthday with family and friends outside in the beautiful Courtyard at the

MJCCA. The celebration will feature activities & crafts for children, Israeli dance

In addition to the regular food trucks, kosher food and desserts will be available for purchase from The Goodfriend Company, Ali's Cookies and Cotton Cravings.

Details:            Families with young children are invited to welcome the Sabbath at Congregation Dor Tamid by

attending Shabbat, Me & Rabbi G on The Road! MJCCA Day Camps will have crafts and activities, followed by Shabbat songs and blessings with Rabbi Glusman. The program will include a visit from the famous Shabbat Dinosaur and snacks for children.

Lag Ba’Omer Community Celebration & Cookout

When:              Sunday, May 18, 4:00 - 8:00 pm

Where:            MJCCA - Camp Isidore Alterman (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)

Cost:                Free and open to the community (Food available for purchase)

                        All are invited to the annual Community Lag Ba'Omer Cookout and Celebration hosted by the

MJCCA and Congregation Ariel. The celebration will take place outside at the beautiful grounds of Camp Isidore Alterman. Activities will include: Boating & fishing on the lake, zip line, obstacle course, archery, live music performance featuring the Fourth Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra, inflatables and bounce house, climbing wall, games and more! Delicious kosher food will be available for purchase. Bring your friends!
