Snellville Comic Book Creator Kicks off Kickstarter Project

Josh Oakes is among the creators of "Last Breath" who are trying to raise funds to make the comic book.

A Snellville resident is among a team of comic book creators who are using Kickstarter to fund their new book.

Local inker Josh Oakes, along with writer and creator Sam Eggleston, artist Jason Baroody, and letterer John Hunt are behind "Last Breath," a comic about an astronaut trapped on the moon with no way home.

With Kickstarter, the comic book team is able to keep "Last Breath" a creator-owned project, meaning that they wouldn't have to receive funding from a publisher or another higher-up who may alter the story. Most famously, a "Vernoica Mars" movie is in the works because of Kickstarter, and actor Zach Braff was able to raise enough funds the same way for a sequel to "Garden State."

Kickstarter allows fans not only donate, but to receive certain prizes or rewards based on how much they donate, determined by the creators. Rewards range from a mention of their names on the "Thank You" page in the finished comic to an advertisement on the back cover.

As of Thursday (July 25) evening, the Kickstarter project for "Last Breath" has 43 backers who have raised $1,995 so far of the comic's $5,000 goal. It has 34 days left, ending Aug. 29.
