Council to Vote on Sunday Alcohol Sales

If given final approval, the measure to allow Sunday retail sales would be on Snellville's November ballot.

City leaders are expected to take the next step in deciding whether Sunday retail alcohol sales come to the city of Snellville this fall during its Monday evening council meeting.

A proposal is on the agenda to have the retail sales considered as a ballot measure for the November 8, 2011, election. , and he is behind the pending resolution.

If given final approval by a majority of the six city council members -- with one member being up for re-election and another seeking a mayoral bid, will join a growing list of municipalities that want citizens to vote on the referendum.

The cities of , , and have already decided in favor of having the referendum in their upcoming elections. is considering doing the same at an upcoming meeting.

In Snellville, if more than half of votes cast in November are in favor, the package sales of malt beverages and wine will be allowed between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Sales would begin on the following Sunday, November 12.

In a poll taken by Snellville Patch, 112 people voted on the idea of bringing Sunday retail sales to Snellville. Approximately 102 people voted yes, eight voted no, and two people were indifferent.

The city council will take up the proposed resolution at its 7:30 p.m. meeting on July 25 at . If citizens wish to speak, they may do so during the meeting's comment period.
