Gwinnett Medical Center Adds New Orthopedic Trauma Specialists

Hospital entered into an agreement with Hughston Clinic.

Gwinnett Medical Center has reached an agreement with Hughston Clinic by adding two orthopedic trauma specialists, according to a press release.

Bruce Ziran, MD and Philip Kregor, MD are now affiliated with the hospital. Both are surgeons with Hughston, which provides orthopedic services, specializing in areas in spine, hand, joint, sports medicine and trauma.

“Through this agreement, GMC will continue to meet the critical needs of patients requiring trauma critical care,” Phil Wolfe, president and CEO of GMC, said in the press release. “We realize that complex traumatic injuries with multiple broken bones, compound fractures and fractures near a joint or the pelvis are more difficult to treat, and our patients can only benefit from this new arrangement.”

  • Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) in Lawrenceville is a state-designated Level II trauma center. It is one of eight Level II trauma centers in the state and is the only designated trauma center in Gwinnett County. GMC has been a designated trauma center since 1990 and obtained Level II status in 2003.
  • Trauma is an injury to the body including those that are self-inflicted, intentional or unintentional. It can impact a single body system or multiple systems.
  • Level II designation is given to hospitals with resources available to treat trauma patients 24 hours a day, including trauma surgeons, specially trained nurses, a trauma registry and access to equipment and operating rooms.
  • A designated trauma surgeon is available at all times. GMC trauma nurses – Trauma Nurse Specialists (TNS) – are trained specifically to care for trauma patients of all levels. These individuals wear red shirts and are assigned to each trauma case. Orthopedic, neurosurgery and complex facial trauma specialists are also available if needed.
The trauma team has access to radiologic services and two state-of-the-art resuscitation rooms. Furthermore, an operating room is available 24 hours a day for trauma/emergency cases and a helicopter landing pad is kept ready. The addition of the Strickland Heart Center and GMC’s open heart program further expanded the trauma care capabilities.
  • GMC participates in the state trauma registry, which is used for activities like research or in tracking injury patterns or complications, for prevention and performance improvement purposes.
  • As a designated trauma center, the hospital receives trauma patients from all over the area. However, 88 percent of GMC’s trauma patients come from incidents within Gwinnett County.
  • GMC is equipped to handle all trauma levels from minor injuries to those who are critically injured, with the exception of burns.
  • GMC treated more than 1,100 trauma patients in 2011.
