Know Before You Go: Restaurant Health Inspections

Results of recent Gwinnett County restaurant inspections in Snellville by East Metro Public Health with a synopsis of deficiencies found by the inspector. These are reports over the past week.

Name: G'angelos pizza & Main Street Restaurant
Location:  2115 B-C Main Street
Score: 90/A
Previous Scores: 94/A (Nov. 15, 2010); 88/B (Sept. 9, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: Chicken salad, chopped ham, and shredded cheese were above recommended temperature (41F), the prep cooler next to the stove was not holding the proper temperature that would adequately maintain foods at 41F or lower. 

Name: Mr. Eggroll Restaurant
Location: 3303 Hwy. 124 Suites 15 and 16
Score: 87/B
Previous Scores: 94/A (Dec. 3, 2010); 89/B (Nov. 17, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: Chicken wings and general tso chicken were above 41F after cooling over six hours, cabbage and green onions were cut without first washing the vegetables, and three fluorescent lighting panels at the prep station and vent hood area needed some of the light bulbs replaced. The plastic shielding for the light bulb was also turning darker with discoloration.

Deficiencies observed: Quat ammonium sanitizer in chemical spray bottles exceeding 400ppm.

June 22

Name: China House II
Location:  4002 Hwy. 78 Suite 210
Score: 80/B
Previous Scores: 96/A (Dec. 29,2010 ); 96/A (Dec. 13, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: No paper towels in men's and women's restrooms, cold-held potentially hazardous foods not maintained below 41oF, and there were no time controls/documentation in place. Raw beef, raw chicken, cooked pork, cooked shrimp, raw shrimp and lo mein noodles in prep cooler at temperatures exceeding 41F, food was not stored at least 6 inches above the floor - soy sauce sitting directly on the floor, containers of chemical sanitizing solutions for wiping cloths stored on the floor or in a manner that presents risk for contamination of food. Two small crawling insects and flies were observed in the facility.

Deficiencies observed: Raw shell eggs were stored above an open carton of celery in the walk-in cooler, a tray containing raw beef and raw pork were stored above raw vegetables on the cook's tray for hibachi.

Name: Uncle Betty's BBQ
Location: 1795 Presidential Circle
Score: 91/A
Previous Scores: 91/A (Dec. 21, 2010)
Deficiencies observed:  Baked chicken and pulled chicken were not reheated to 165F in all parts of the food within two hours of being removed from the walk-in cooler.

 June 23

Name: Waffle House
Location: 2554 HIGHWAY 78
Score: 93/A
Previous Scores: 87/B (Nov. 17, 2010); 90/A (Aug. 17, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: Observed whipped topping and milk in the cooler with expiration dates of 06/16/2011 and 06/18/11 (repeat violation), waffle syrup containers were being reused for pepper storage, and cold water was turned off at front handsink during inspection.

Name: Krystal’s 
Location:  2484 HIGHWAY 78
Score: 76/C
Previous Scores: 87/B (Dec. 16, 2010); 90/A (Nov. 3, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: Employees were observed drinking from an unapproved, uncovered container in the food prep or food storage area - the uncovered cup was stored on prep table next to grits. Ice machine, beverage and tea nozzles had buildup of black mold-like substance , cold-held potentially hazardous foods were not maintained below 41F, no time controls/documentation was in place, cheese in ice bath on prep line and potentially hazardous foods in walk-in cooler at temperatures exceeding 41F, container of sanitizer stored on table next to flavored syrups for drinks and single-service articles, in-use utensils for hot-held potentially hazardous foods not stored in a container of 135oF water - scoops for foods on stove top in 101F water and scoop for grits in 92F water, ambient temperature of walk-in cooler at 46F. Another violation for employee drinks in unapproved containers stored in a prep area may result in permit suspension.
Will perform followup inspection within 10 days 

Name: McDonald's at Centerville
Location: 3460 Highway 124
Score: 96/A
Previous Scores: 96/A (May 24, 2011); 84/B (May 14, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: Dumpster were not equipped with drain plug, the doors to the dumpsters were open at the time of inspection, and several flies were observed throughout the facility, especially in the lobby area.

Name: Ruby Tuesday
Location: 3090 Hwy. 78
Score: 91/A
Previous Scores: 95/A (Nov. 16, 2010); 96/A (Sep. 29, 2010)
Deficiencies observed: Cold-held potentially hazardous foods were not maintained below 41F on right prep cooler.
