Snellville Borders Gets Reprieve

Borders said Tuesday that the store in Snellville has been taken of the closure list that would have gone into effect June 22.

Thanks to extensive negotiations the Snellville Borders is off the list of book stores across the nation that were slated for closure announcements by June 22.

"That store is remaing open for the foreseeable future," said Mary Davis, a Borders spokeswoman. "It was on the list of stores that we were trying to negotiate with landlords to get more time to consider accepting or rejecting the lease."

, Borders announced that 51 stores, including the Snellville location may be forced to shutter if extension agreements were not reached by June 22. That list was whittled down to 45 recently.

However, Border and lenders have worked out an agreement to get more time to work out lease agreements for the Snellville store, Davis said Tuesday.

"At one point, the store was going to be one of 40 or so forced to close, but that's no longer the case," Davis said Tuesday.

Now, the store is getting a reprieve until lease agreements can be made, or something else is determined. There was a published report of a new September deadline for extensions to be met, but Davis said that also is no longer the case.

"There's significant interest in the company now -- in the sale of the company," she said.

That means Borders customers should stay tuned.

According to the Borders website, it has already closed 228 of the more than 600 stores since February. Six of those stores have been in Georgia: Atlanta's Buckhead and Parkway Pointe Center, Austell, Buford (Mall of Georgia), Kennesaw and
