Snellville Store Pulls Jennie-O Turkey

The Sam's Club in Snellville is among retailers who are pulling Jennie-O turkey burgers.

Jennie-O Turkey Store, a division of Hormel Foods, has recalled 55,000 pounds of frozen, raw turkey burger products that may contain Salmonella, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The turkey burgers were sold exclusively in Sam's Clubs stores nationwide, including a An employee in the Snellville location's meat department said the products have been removed.

“At Sam’s Club, we are committed to providing our members with safe and affordable foods," said Christi Davis Gallagher, a spokesperson for the big-box warehouse store. "We are working very closely with Jennie-O Turkey Store to fully understand the details of this situation."

Consumers who have purchased Jennie-O's All Natural Lean White Meat Turkey Burgers marked with a date of Dec. 23, 2011, "should not consumer it," according to the Jennie-O company website. "Instead we are asking that consumers return this product to a Sam’s Club store for a full refund," the company said.

In addition, Sam's Club has placed a sales restriction on all products in question to keep any items from being purchased, Gallagher said. The recall does not include Wal-Mart stores, the parent company for Sam's Clubs retailers, she added.

The investigation into the Salmonella food poisoning extended into Georgia, but so far cases in Colorado, Ohio and Wisconsin have been specifically linked to the Jennie-O product, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Health officials are continuing to investigate illnesses related to the recall, and additional raw turkey products may be recalled. They are asking that consumers take extra care with all raw turkey products.

To prevent foodborne illnesses, health officials advise washing hands in warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry, and to cook poultry, including turkey burgers, to 165 F.

The products subject to recall include:

  • 4-pound boxes of Jennie-O Turkey Store "All Natural Turkey Burgers with seasonings Lean White Meat." Each box contains 12 1/3-pound individually wrapped burgers. The box is marked with identifying lot numbers "32710" through "32780" on the side of the box.
