Dancing Off the Chub

Zumba zumba zumba!

I went to Zumba today! Have any of you ever gone to a class? Wow! It was so much fun. I was pretty horrible at it, to be honest, but had a blast. offers classes for $5, or $10 for four classes, which is a pretty good deal.

A few weeks ago I went on a cruise and found myself watching everyone else dance. Every inch of me wanted to join in, but I am a horrible, awful dancer. I've always been a wallflower and never took the time to learn any steps. Once, I went to a Latin dance club with a friend, but basically just wiggled and moved my feet back and forth.

I have rhythm, don't get me wrong. I play piano, sing (kind of), and am a spectacular toe tapper. But if I have to include my hips or arms... uh-uh. My daughter even laughs at me when I dance, and she's three. She, on the other hand... well, let's just say her soul is not of European descent. That girl can boogie.

It's just inhibition, really. I tend to live in my head. That's probably why I'm a writer. I used to be so shy that I would turn beat red from neck to ear tips whenever I answered a question in class. I'm over that, for the most part, but still inhibited.

So I started Zumba classes with the hopes of learning a few dance moves while exercising, and getting out of my shell a little bit. So far it's working out pretty well! I can now cha-cha, mambo and salsa. Well, my feet can. I haven't added the arms yet. Or the hips.

I just remembered, I actually did used to dance regularly when I lived in Indiana. It was called contra-dancing, which is basically line dancing with a Renaissance twist. (Yes, I know I'm a nerd.)

Now I just need to learn some cool dances. If you haven't found a work-out routine that you enjoy, give Zumba a try!

I wanted to pass along a website I found that has tons of healthy, delicious recipes. This one is for whipped maple sweet potatoes. Enjoy!
