What’s Happening in the World of Wellness?

In today's wellness news: Paula Deen is not mentioned, but diabetes is, asthmatics may be taking a pill made from dust mite protein soon and now there is a cool app for pollution readings.

~ It's official. Gwinnett Medical Center has performed its first open-heart surgery. Congratulations go to lead surgeons Drs. Alexander Justicz and David Langford. They have started performing coronary bypasses. Last week's procedures marked the first-ever in Gwinnett.

~ Have you heard that movie star and “30 Rock” television star Alec Baldwin has been diagnosed as having pre-diabetes. He has reportedly given up sugar and added a Pilates and spinning to his exercise routine. He said he has lost 30 pounds since last May. Good for him. According to the American Diabetes Association, pre-diabetes is a condition that typically develops before type II diabetes. The body's blood glucose levels are higher than, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.

~ Here's something you should not think about for too long. Scientists have said that a pill made from proteins found in dust mites could revolutionize asthma treatment. Apparently, the pill works by re-tuning the immune system and asthmatics so it does not overreact when a person is exposed to mite droppings, which is one of the leading causes of asthma attacks. A British newspaper reports that in a study of 600 asthma sufferers, one in three were able to stop using their inhalers.

~ In a semi-related story, people with lung or heart conditions, children and older adults are most at risk when particle pollution is elevated. Wouldn't it be nice to turn to our telephone and find out what the pollution index is for a particular city? There's an app for that! The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has launched a free app for Apple and Android phones. You will be able to enter a ZIP code and receive the pollutant and ozone levels for more than 400 cities across the USA. The app is called EPA AirNow.
