Heat Advisory Extended Through July 13-14
Officials are advising citizens not to spend long amounts of time outside today.
With temperatures expected to reach 97 in Snellville today, a heat advisory is again in force until 5 a.m. Thursday morning. The area also remains under a Code Orange unhealthy air alert.
According to the advisory issued by the National Weather Center, the heat advisory is for portions of north and central Georgia, including Gwinnett Counties. The heat index for Snellville is expected to reach about 105 degrees. Around the area, the heat advisory indicates that temperatures of 100 degrees to 110 degrees can be felt. The hottest temperatures will be in the afternoon hours.
A heat advisory means that a period of dangerous heat is expected. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge is advising people to heed the advisory.

"It is safe to say that firefighters respond to a number of heat related emergencies during the warm summer months. These incidents include people who work outside or participate in outdoor recreational activities," Rutledge said. "Firefighters suggest drinking plenty of cold refreshing water and sport drinks (to replace electrolytes) and limiting the time you spend outside in the hot sun."

- Take frequent breaks form outside and cool off in air-conditioning
- Dress in light-weight and light-colored clothing when outside
- Check on the elderly to make sure they are OK
- Have portable fans handy to circulate cool air indoors
