Injured GWA Football Player Out of ICU, Recovering at Scottish Rite

Family said Jon Ross Snell, injured during football practice more than two weeks ago, is on the mend, but still has a long way back.

Jon Ross Snell, the middle school football player from George Walton Academy who collapsed during football practice more than two week ago, is out of ICU at Children's Hospital at Egleston and recovering at Scottish Rite.

According to an email update circulating among family and friends, by his cousin, David Snell, Jon Ross was moved to Scottish Rite by ambulance on Oct. 1 to begin intensive rehabilitation.

"I got to ride in the ambulance with Jon Ross. He held his football on the stretcher the whole way while I held his big gorilla," Nan Snell wrote, Jon Ross's mother wrote. "This is a really neat place. The rooms are very big and nice. They are also more private. I have all Jon Ross's posters and pictures up that people have sent."

Jon Ross, son of Van and Nan Snell, of Loganville, collapsed at football practice on Sept. 17 and was life flighted to Egleston hospital in Atlanta. According to a Care Bridge Page set up for him, Jon Ross somehow incurred a brain hemorrhage to the right side of his brain. He is also reported to have a spot on the stem of his brain.

He is reported to have said he wasn't feeling well during football practice at GWA before collapsing and losing consciousness.

Snell said the rehabilitation scheduled for Jon Ross was very intense.

"He starts at 8:45 in the morning and gets a break at lunch to rest and then goes till about 3:30 in the afternoon. I can't wait to get him going," Snell wrote. "He has a lot to learn again, but with all the prayers we are all sending up, I just have to believe he will get there."

Snell asked that people continue to keep Jon Ross in their prayers as he continues his recovery.
