Wind and Ice Alerts for Gwinnett

Expect strong winds and cold temperatures through the evening.

The National Weather service in Atlanta has put out two alerts today – the first is a wind advisory that remains in effect until 8 p.m. this evening. The second is for later tonight into the overnight hours and warns of icing on bridges and overpasses.

These two alerts apply to Gwinnett County, including the Snellville area.

Alert 1 – Wind Advisory from the National Weather Service

WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EST THIS EVENING...

* LOCATIONS... MOST OF NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA SOUTH AND EAST OF DALTON TO ROME.

* WINDS... WEST 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH.

* TIMING... FROM AROUND NOON TO 8 PM THIS EVENING.

* IMPACTS... WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT... ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. TREES OR TREE LIMBS COULD BE BLOWN DOWN. SECURE LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 20 MPH... OR GUSTS TO 35 MPH OR STRONGER ARE EXPECTED.

Alert 2 – Overnight Icing Alert from the National Weather Service

*ICY PATCHES ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY THURSDAY...

* LOCATION... NORTH GEORGIA... GENERALLY NORTH OF A LINE FROM LAGRANGE TO ATHENS.

* HAZARDS... ROADS WILL BE WET THIS EVENING FOLLOWING THE RAINFALL TODAY. BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES MAY FREEZE OVERNIGHT AND EARLY THURSDAY.

* TIMING... FROM LATE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY MORNING.

* IMPACTS... AS TEMPERATURES DROP BELOW FREEZING... BLACK ICE WILL BE POSSIBLE ESPECIALLY ALONG BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. DRIVERS SHOULD USE EXTRA CAUTION ESPECIALLY THURSDAY MORNING.
