The check was awarded Saturday, the last day of the 2013 market.

On Saturday (Sept. 28) the Snellville Farmers Market closed its doors on another successful season. This year the market was awarded the Best Farmers Market in the United States Award by the American Farmland Trust Organization.

By tradition, the SFM hosted its annual “thank you vendors” lunch with a delicious lunch, donated by the Summit Chase Country Club.

But making this year even more special, the Snellville Farmers’ Market donated $10,000 to the Snellville Veterans’ Memorial.

As the market chairman, Gretchen Schulz made the presentation to Tom Witts, Snellville mayor pro tem and the chairman of the Snellville Veteran’s Memorial Committee; and Barbara Bender, treasurer of the Memorial Committee.

Schulz explained, “Because the Snellville Farmers Market is an all-volunteer organization, we are not only able to keep our vendor booth fees very low, we are also able to keep our expenses low. Because of this the market has been able to accumulate enough funds to make this donation. The committee wanted to give something back to the community which has been so generous in its support of the market. ... We believe the new Snellville Veterans Memorial will make Snellville 'a destination' and will bring more tourists and visitors to our community.”

Witts, visibly moved by the donation, thanked the market, its committee members and the vendors who consistently bring their top quality wares to sell. He went on to explain the journey taken to bring the memorial to Snellville, thanking the members of the Memorial Committee and the volunteers for their time and efforts and the community for their ongoing support.

The memorial, which is being built in front of the Snellville Senior Center, across Oak Street from the Town Greene, is being built entirely by donations. Veterans' tiles and paver bricks purchased by October 1 will be in place when the memorial opens.
