Avoiding Frozen Pipes

Avoiding Frozen Pipes Can Be Simple With the Tips.

With the recent snow-scare, we know more freezing temperatures are just around the corner. When the mecury drops on the outside it can cause trouble in your home. Have you ever experienced frozen pipes that have exploded? It sounds like a mix between dub step, the zombie apocalypse, and a New York City subway! Not something any homeowner ever wants to experience. We would like to offer a few tips to help you avoid that awful catastrophe!

Tip # 1. Before the onset of cold weather make sure that your pipes are properly insulated. Pipes that are exposed are the most vulnerable to freezing. We suggest that you leave your cabinets open under sinks and appliance areas so that the warmer air can aid in preventing the non-insulated pipes from freezing. This is important especially for pipes that are close to outside walls.

Tip # 2. During extreme weather conditions it is best to keep the thermostat set at the same temperature during the day and at night. If you are traveling and will be away it is best to leave the thermostat set at no lower than 55° F.

Tip # 3. Keep your water running. It’s best to keep a steady drip going so that the pressure doesn’t buildup. We suggest that you let the water trickle from a faucet of an outside wall. By allowing the water to drip this will prevent water from being stagnant inside the pipes and freezing.

However, if you believe that you have frozen pipes, shut off the main water supply and call a professional plumber.
