Patch Virtual Book Club: Did You Miss Any Summer Reads?

Hot books of the summer reviewed.

I haven’t started 'Gone Girl' because there are about 300 people in front of me waiting for a library copy. I like to read reviews and so far it looks like most people love the twisty storyline and thriller plot. I’ll pick it up on my Kindle and start reading to have it done by the end of the month.

Some other hot books that have been hyped over the summer that I want to review include:

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
Toward the beginning of summer I kept hearing about this book, it was mentioned everywhere and I just couldn’t resist reading it. This is not my typical type of book; I like a little romance (i.e. Nora Roberts) but not the hot and heavy stuff. An interesting fact about Fifty Shades is that one main reason it got hyped so much is because it was initially connected to Twilight. She wrote fan fiction based off the Edward Cullen and Bella Swan characters on websites. Once concerns popped up over the sexual nature she moved everything to her own website, renamed the characters and made it a book. Personally, I enjoyed reading the books. She is not a great writer and you will have to gloss over some grammar issues, but the plot keeps you hooked and it’s a good book for reading fluff. Yes, there will be a movie, and it is slated for 2014.

Bossypants by Tina Fey
I was really looking forward to reading this autobiography because I am a huge Tina Fey fan and was expecting to fall out of my chair laughing.

However, the book was just not that interesting. She had her moments but tried too hard to be funny and most of her humor was crude. I have three other friends who read it and we all agree that the book would get 2 out of 5 stars.

The White Queen by Phillipa Gregory
Gregory is known for writing historical fiction. I am not a history buff, never have been and probably never will. But I read a series by her about King Henry VIII and all his wives called ‘The Tudor Court’. It was one of the most fascinating series that I have ever read. She makes history very interesting and you find yourself learning things you may not have known before about England’s jaded history.

This new book is set amid the deadly feuds known as the Wars of the Roses, a time before King Henry and the Tudors. She tells a fascinating story about brothers who pit against each other to win the throne of England to be King and explores the most famous English unsolved mystery of the missing princes in the Tower of London.
