Author Claims Details of 'Gone With the Wind' Author Margaret Mitchell's Death Were Covered up

As the anniversary of the famed Atlanta author's death approaches, a new book from the daughter of the man who hit Mitchell as she crossed a Midtown street reveals some startling revelations and accusations.

Gloria Gravitt Moulder of Temple, Ga. is the daughter of Hugh Dorsey Gravitt, the man whose vehicle hit and killed Margaret Mitchell in a Midtown Atlanta intersection on Aug. 11, 1949.

Saturday marks the 63rd anniversary of the tragedy, which resulted in the death of the famed "Gone With The Wind" author five days later.

The story of Mitchell's death that was portrayed in the press is not the full story, Moulder claims.

Moulder’s book, "Death Of Margaret Mitchell, The Tragedy Behind Gone With The Wind," was published earlier this year.

The book alleges there was a cover-up and Moulder recently told St. Louis-based author Sally Tippett Rains that, “My dad was so traumatized from the incident, then the cover up, lies, and media circus that occurred following it, that he refused to tell what actually happened that day for 42 years.”

But ultimately near the end of his life, Gravitt, who passed away two decades ago, revealed the details to his now 73-year-old daughter.

In her review of Moulder's book, Rains wrote, "What if Gravitt was not drunk? ... What if there were other circumstances that happened that fateful evening that were never even investigated? What if due to the fact that she was a famous, wealthy, and beloved person parts of the case were covered up? This is the premise of her book."
