Great Escape: American Pride, Georgia Tradition

The Stone Mountain Laser show earns a new level of respect this Fourth of July.

Regardless of where you were born, you eventually solidified your status as a Georgian when you actually screamed for your home state during the humid, psychedelic laser-dancing excitement of a Stone Mountain Park Laser Show.

Some things don’t change. The same show I attended as a child with my Michigan transplant parents is the one I kissed my high school boyfriend, now husband, under, and the same one I took my own children to last year.

Until. This. Year. To quote one of the show's theme songs: “God Bless America!” The Laser show has improved with the times.

Although some Yankee versus Dixie pride songs and themes still riddle the show, the show now has digital graphics - dubbed Mountainvision - that provide amazing 3-D effects of the mountain opening up. It brings the stories to life. These improvements now re-classify the show as entertainment.

Take a little trip down memory lane. Grab a waterproof blanket and a picnic basket of food we have been too health-conscious to eat - KFC - and join the finger-licking crowd!

Also, stop by the dollar store for some glow necklaces and wristbands.  If you are going to re-live this memory, re-live it right. Go on Saturday or Sunday this weekend and enjoy a great patriotic fireworks display without the holiday traffic jam.

The show starts at 9:30pm, so you may want to get a sitter for the little ones. Vehicle entry fee is still $10 and so is a KFC Sunday bucket. But getting a fantastic reminder that you should be proud to be an American is totally free.
