Fire Heavily Damages Home on Waverly Downs Drive

Fire believe blaze was caused by deep fryer.

A fire at a Snellville residence possibly started by a deep fryer caused heavy damage Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Fire Department, crews responded a little after 5:30 p.m. to the 4200 block of Waverly Downs Drive and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof.

The fire caused damage to the attic, roof and interior of the home. No injuries were reported; all of the residents were outside of the house at the time of the incident.

According to the press release, a resident “stated that the fire [was] started by a deep fryer where the oil flashed and ignited.”

Fire crews arrived on scene at 5:37 p.m. The fire was under control at 7:14 p.m.

According to the report sent by Lt. Colin Rhoden:

“Crews attempted an aggressive interior attack. Due to high heat and heavy winds gusts, defensive operations were started. When the fire was knocked down, firefighters again made an interior attack where they were confronted with extremely high heat conditions. A ladder truck used the master stream to extinguish the mass of the fire and was then taken out of operation. Crews again entered the structure to extinguish hot spots and perform property conservation.”

Three adults were displaced by the fire and the Red Cross was notified
