ICE Agents Release Hold on Grayson Man Involved in Fatal Car Wreck

Officials with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department said the driver of the second car in a fatal wreck in Grayson was released Monday on the instruction of immigration authorities.

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department said immigration officials ordered the release of a hold on a Grayson man, following his arrest and charge in a fatal accident on Sunday evening.Β 

Local police charged Mutajah Paasewe, 23, of Grayson, . He was also being held for immigration purposes. However, by Monday afternoon Paasewe was released on bond.

Lt. Sean Smith, spokesman with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department, said the original hold was not in error, and that it was the decision of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release Paasewe.

"The decision to release him was ICE’s decision after an investigation," Smith said, adding that Paasewe's "green card" status and driving under the influence charge were factors.

According to the Immigration and Nationality Act, permanent residents may be held and deported for a number of crimes, including those that enforce jail time of a year or more. Judges also have discretion.

In Paasewe's case his driving under the influence charge came with a $1,501 bond, which was posted. And, at this time, police have not indicated any other charges against him.
