NBA Player Jarrett Jack Arrested, Charged With DUI

Jack, a point guard with the New Orleans Hornets, was arrested in Snellville on Sunday.

Jarrett Jack, a back-up point guard for the New Orleans Hornets, was arrested Sunday morning in Snellville on charges of driving under the influence.

Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead said the NBA player, and former Georgia Tech basketball star, was stopped at approximately 4 a.m. for speeding westbound on U.S. Highway 78. An officer noted he was weaving and traveling 66 mph in a 45-mph zone, the chief said.

The officer paced the driver to determine his approximate speed. He was stopped in the area of McGee Road.

The officer reported smelling an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver. Snellville police say they gave Jack field sobriety tests, and that he failed.

Jack, who has an Atlanta address, was then transported to the Gwinnett County Jail and given a breath test at 5:38, about 90 minutes after the stop.  At that time, his reading was .079 or just below the legal level of .08.

Police say they charged him with driving under the influence because "he was a less safe driver and most likely had a reading in excess of .08 at the time of the stop." Alcohol dissipates from the system at a rate of about .02 grams per hour.

Jack was also charged with speeding and failure to maintain lane. He was later released at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20.

Jack, who is backup for point guard Chris Paul, is averaging 7.6 points per game and 2.8 assists. He has been a professional player for five years, including time on the Toronto Raptors.
