Walton County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Paul Slater, who was shot by a Loganville mother on Jan. 4 when he broke into her home, has now been released from Gwinnett Medical Center and is being held, without bond, in the Walton County Detention Center in Monroe, Ga. WCSO's Capt. Greg Hall said that he was being held without bond on a probation violation.
"If he has a lawyer he will be able to petition the Superior Court or for another appearance in front of a magistrate judge," Hall said. "He should have a preliminary hearing - possibly in a couple of weeks."
Hall said Slater was picked up from the hospital Sunday by deputies from WCSO. He had his first appearance in front of the Magistrate Judge Monday morning.
Slater had been recovering from gunshot wounds after being hit five times by Melinda Herman when he confronted her hiding in a closet with her 9-year-old twins. According to the police report, Slater had knocked on the door and then rang the doorbell. She reportedly contacted her husband, who told her not to answer the door as he wasn’t expecting anyone. When she saw Slater retrieve a crowbar from the car, she grabbed her children, her .38 revolver, and hid in an attic closet.
Slater broke into the house and subsequently located her in the closet. At that time she opened fire on him, hitting him with five of the six rounds in the gun. Her husband had already called 911 and by the time police arrived, the mother had retreated to a neighbor with the children. Slater had tried to escape in his car, but had subsequently crashed in a wooded area in the neighborhood.
