No Major Memorial Day Traffic Accidents in Snellville

Snellville police reported no serious or fatal accidents over the Memorial Day holiday, but there were a few serious incidents in the county and 15 people died across the state.

Snellville Police Department had no serious traffic incidents over the Memorial Day holiday weekended, including no fatalities.

There were, however, 14 citations for motorists not wearing seatbelts from May 28 - May 30, according to Chief Roy Whitehead. There were at least two reports of driving under the influence, according to incident reports.

In May, the chief added, there were a total of 319 tickets for not wearing seatbelts. (The department is taking part in the state's campaign from May 23 - June 5.)

In Gwinnett County, the reported a total of 108 accidents with no injuries in the county, six with injuries, six with possible injuries and one with entrapment. However, there were no major traffic incidents in unincorporated Snellville, with one accident with minor injuries on May 29 just after 1 p.m., according to Cpl. Edwin Ritter, of Gwinnett County Police Department.

In the state of Georgia, there was a significant reduction in traffic accidents reported in over the Memorial Day weekend compared to 2010, a greater number of those resulted in deaths, according to figures released by the Georgia Department of Public Safety Tuesday.

Of the 273 traffic accidents worked by Georgia State Patrol posts in the 78 hours from the official start of the Memorial Day weekend at 6 p.m. Friday until midnight Monday, there were 273 accidents resulting in 177 injuries and 12 deaths. There were 15 fatalities in the state with all agencies reporting. In 2010, there were 2,143 accidents with 945 injuries and five fatalities. 

The Georgia Department of Public Safety keeps a record of the total number of crashes, injuries and fatalities for the Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holiday travel periods every year, updating it every six hours during the period.
