Roof Collapse at Assisted Living Facility

The morning roof collapsed forced the evacuation of about 110 residents from the Golden Living Center in Lawrenceville.

In a release Thursday afternoon, Gwinnett Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge gave more details about this morning's roof collapse at the on Scenic Highway. 

The roof gave way over the dining area of the facility around 9:30 a.m. A construction crew was reportedly doing work on that section of the roof at the time of the collapse. The workers were said to be removing and replacing the roof materials when the accident happened. 

Fortunately, no residents or staff were inside the room at the time of the collapse and no one was injured.

Davangi Desai, excutive director of Golden Living Center - Medical Arts, said the roof collapse occurred during the scheduled replacement and reconstruction of the facility's roof.

"Our caregivers immediately enacted their safety procedures, and all patients and residents are safe and comfortable," Desai said in a released statement.

Desai said all residents are being moved to nearby facilities until the facility has been repaired and inspected. Officials said some residents were being transported to other Golden Living Centers.

School buses, vans and ambulances lined up outside to transport the 110 residents to safety.

"The safety and well being of our patients and residents is always our first priority, and we are proud of how our caregivers have responded to this situation," he added.

OSHA and Building inspectors arrived on the scene to try to determine a cause of the collapse.
