Shot Teen Ends up Behind Bars

A Snellville teenager told police a stray bullet hit him in the leg while playing basketball, but because he had a warrant for a probation violation, he was arrested after being released from the hospital.

After reporting to police that he had been shot in the leg, a Snellville teen ended up behind bars due to an arrest warrant for a probation violation.

According to the Gwinnett County Police report, an officer met with the 19-year-old at Eastside Medical Center on a recent Thursday. He told authorities that he was playing basketball at Lawrenceville apartment complex with seven other guys when they heard gunfire.

While they continued to play, the man was shot six inches above his ankle by a stray bullet, he said. He and the others fled the area, and he called one of his friends to pick him up to take him home. The man who drove with him to the basketball court had apparently left him at there.

He told the officer that he thought he could just "walk off" the gunshot wound, but he was forced to go to the hospital after his father saw him limping around the house. The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m., and he didn't get to the hospital until 12:40 p.m.

The victim never saw any possible suspects or vehicles during the shooting.

The officer discovered he had an arrest warrant after the interview when he ran his information through the Georgia Crime Information Center. After the man was released from the hospital, he was placed under arrest.
