Snellville Condominium Fire Caused by Kitchen Mishap

Two adults were displaced due to the Wednesday incident.

Two adults have been displaced due to a kitchen fire at a Snellville condominium Wednesday (Nov. 6).

The fire was reported around 1:28 p.m. at Kings Gate Condominiums off Lenora Church Road, according to Gwinnett County Fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

Crews found light smoke coming from the front door of a two-story condo. Firefighters deployed attack lines and immediately entered the structure to combat the blaze. The initial fire crew made a quick knockdown on the flames and contained the fire to the kitchen.

The flames caused moderate damage to the kitchen and sent smoke throughout the condo unit. The Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance for the victims displaced by the damage.

The fire appeared to be accidental and was caused by a pan of grease left unattended on the stove by the occupant.

"Cooking remains a leading cause of residential fires in the United States" said Rutledge. "Firefighters urge people to stay in the kitchen when cooking and be sure to turn the burners off when you leave the room. Grease fires ignite quickly and spread fast to the cabinets and walls.  Have a portable fire extinguisher close at hand and use it to douse small fires on the stove as you evacuate."

Equipment at the scene included: 4-Engines; 2-Ladder Trucks; 1-Squad; 1-Medic Ambulance; 1-Air & Light Unit; and 2-Battalion Chiefs.
