UPDATED: 7:30 p.m., August 15, 2011

Gwinnett County Fire Investigators have charged Mia Hamer with first-degree arson in connection with an August 5 fire at a Snellville apartment complex.

DeKalb County police picked Hamer up, and she was then transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center on August 12, according to a press statement from Capt. Tommy Rutledge, public information officer for Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. It was previously reported that Hamer surrendered to police.

Hamer, a 46-year-old Stone Mountain woman, intentionally set fire to clothing in the closet of her daughter's boyfriend, officials said. No one was injured, though the boyfriend was in the shower at the time. The occupants - four adults and three children - put out the fire, preventing it from spreading further, according to a Gwinnett Fire press release.

Fire officials said that Hamer's motive appears to be a domestic dispute between her daughter's boyfriend and herself.

“We are fortunate that no one was injured or killed and that the fire was able to be put out quickly,” Rutledge said in a press release.

The penalty for arson, a federal offense, is one to twenty years behind bars. Hamer remains in jail, where she is being held without bond.
