Wrecked Car on Snellville Town Green Reminds Drivers Not to Text and Drive

Snellville Police are hoping drivers will learn to "put the phone down."

“Put the phone down.”

That’s the message the Snellville Police Department is hoping those driving past city hall on Highway 78 will learn this week.

The police have placed a wrecked vehicle on the Town Green as a reminder of the dangers of driving while texting on a cell phone.

The car, which was donated by Statewide Wrecker Service, will be on the green until Friday (Jan. 31).

Earlier this month, Snellville PD's Special Operations worked along Highway 78 specifically looking for violations related to illegal cell phone use, according to a post on the department's Facebook page. In less than an hour, 10 violations were observed and one person was arrested.

These violations include talking on a cell phone while not using due care, such as cutting people off, not using turn signals and not maintaining a lane; and writing, sending or reading a text-based communication while operating a motor vehicle.

Several violators said they were reading, not texting, which is still illegal, even when stopped at a traffic light.
