City Council Meeting Notes

Snellville City Council met Monday, March 14; Brookwood High football team were among honorees.

If you weren't at the City Council meeting, here is a quick rundown of the major actions by council members.

1.  Brookwood football team honored

Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer extended his sincere congratulations to the Brookwood High School’s Bronco football team and honored them for their high achievements this year.  They won the Georgia High School Association’s Class AAAAA State championship.  Coached by Mark Crews, the team scored the third highest points ever in a Georgia State championship during finals.  They set a new school record for 530 total points scored.  They received the Mayor’s Cup for their achievements and for winning 42-21 over South Gwinnett.

2.  Water Conservation 

The council voted unanimously to restrict water use in order to conform to Gwinnett County’s new regulations.

3.  Walton EMC Franchise 

The council approved 5-1 to a 50 year contract to approve the franchise agreement (rent).  The city allows the Walton EMC franchise to use the city’s right-of-way.  

4.  New items of business:

  • Stormwater contract bids were unanimously approved for the amount of $331,571.50.
  • Unanimous approval was given for the police department to receive a copier/scanner with funds from the Confiscated Assets Fund.
  • The hearing on the Town Green was postponed until the next meeting.
  • Phil Davis was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.  

5.  Mayor’s Report 

The mayor attended the first evening of the Citizen’s Police Academy, and reported a high turn-out and interesting curriculum.  He also reported a low turn-out at the Government 101 course, as well as that the new public works building is up. 

 6.  Public Comments 

  • Kathy Creasey invited the council to the Gwinnett Fire and EMS open house on Sunday March 20th, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
  • Kurt Schultz offered his opinion that the council should wait until the end of the farmer’s market to begin their work on the town green. 
  • Shane Lockhart suggested creating a skate park for teens in Snellville and was referred to the Parks and Recreation department.
