Construction for Veterans Memorial Delayed

While the capstone has stalled cosntruction, the delay means residents can still purchase tiles or pavers.

When the city of Snellville broke ground for the Veterans Memorial during the Star Spangled Labor Day celebration Aug. 31, the memorial committee had announced that the monument would debut by Veterans Day (Nov. 11), but the corner of Oak Road and Highway 78 is still bare.

The memorial has had a minor setback in construction due to the availability of the capstone which will crown the top of the memorial wall, according to Mayor Pro Tem Tom Witts, who's also the chairman of the memorial committee. The capstone, which will mimic the stone on the city hall building, was not readily available as was anticipated.

“Rather than compromise our vision for the wall we felt it was important to maintain the integrity of the design and wait for the right stone to be manufactured,“ said Witts, “This monument is going to be a centerpiece for our city and the couple of months delay, although unfortunate, will soon be forgotten when people see the finished memorial.”

The delay has an upside, though: Residents who wish to buy tiles or pavers for their veterans or themselves now have an extended window to purchase them and be sure that it is on the memorial in time for the dedication.

Tiles and pavers may be purchased online at www.snellville.thatsmybrick.com, or they can drop their completed applications by Snellville City Hall, where applications are available, too.

Anyone purchasing a tile between now and Dec. 15 also can receive a certificate with a rendering of the tile that is suitable for framing.

“The delay was unforeseen, but the committee is excited for everyone to see the finished product,” Witts continued. “I assure you that the Snellville Veteran’s Memorial will make Everybody Proud to be Somebody in Snellville.”
