Construction on Briscoe Park Making Progress

Now that the first phase of renovations are complete, the second phase of construction is in full swing.

The Master Plan for has been in place for around eight years now. , which includes the realignment of Snell Drive, a new restroom building, new playground area, additional parking, two new bridges and a new section of retaining stone wall, was completed in 2009.

Phase II of the project began in June of this year and is scheduled to be completed by October. So far, the old softball field, lower tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and Partee Plaza have been removed.  Replacing those will be an approximately 160,000 square foot lit multi-use field, a 130 space parking area and Partee monument and flags that will be relocated to the entrance of the new field.

While the construction will be completed by October, the field will not be available for use until the summer of 2013 to allow for the turf to grow in.

According to Lisa Platt, Director of Parks and Recreation, the city has also decided to move forward with a separate project by hiring Walton EMC to remove all old wiring/conduit and replace them with new, in order to have not just better service to the park, but to allow for connectivity of all the transformers within the main section of the park.

"Should one transformer fail," said Platt, "the power can be shifted to one of the other transformers without the loss of power."

Previouslym all transformers were interconnected.

Both of these projects were funded with the use of 2005 and 2009 SPLOST allocations specific for Parks and Recreation's use.

The remaining balance of the 2009 SPLOST money allocated for Parks and Recreation will go toward the completion of Phase II B, which will entail removing the Partee restroom and Yarbrough softball field.  In its place will be a two or three field softball complex with a building that will serve as a concession stand/restroom/maintenance building.  These fields can be utilized by both adult softball and girls youth fast pitch softball.
