GCPD Animal Welfare Announces New Program to Help Stray Cats

If you have a barn or a stable, you could help save a stray cat in Gwinnett.

The Gwinnett County Police Department’s Animal Welfare & Enforcement Section has instituted a new program to help save more of the stray and feral cats that get turned into the shelter every day. In many instances, these cats end up being euthanized.

The program is operated in the Companion Animal Rescue League (C.A.R.L. - a local rescue organization) and Planned PEThood of Georgia (a low cost spay/neuter clinic). The good news is that it isn't restricted just to Gwinnett County. Anyone in the state of Georgia can participate.

According to officials, every day several “feral” cats are turned in at the Gwinnett County Shelter.  These cats are typically shy or fearful of people and are not great options for people looking for a house pet - they prefer the company of other cat and are much happier living a life roaming around and catching critters. As such, these cats are ideal to provide for a natural form of pest control for barn and stable owners. This new program will help  get the cats safely out of the Gwinnett Animal Shelter and into a more suitable lifestyle. At the same time, they provide a service for barn and stable owners.

Here's how the program works:

When a farm, barn or a stable owner decides that a “barn cat” is for them, they should contact either the Gwinnett County Shelter or Planned PEThood.  The cat will be pulled from the Gwinnett County Shelter, spayed/neutered and vaccinated at Planned PEThood, and adopted out through C.A.R.L. to begin his or her new life as a barn cat!
