Gwinnett Extends Toilet Rebate Program

Homeowners and renters can receive a $200 rebate for replacing older toilets.

Commissioners approved an agreement with the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District on Tuesday to continue Gwinnett County’s participation in the toilet rebate program. Since 2010, Gwinnett residents have replaced more than 11,700 inefficient toilets, saving an estimated 221,800 gallons of water each day.

Toilets are the main source of water use in the home, accounting for nearly 30 percent of residential indoor water consumption, and some of those manufactured prior to 1994 use up to seven gallons per flush. “As toilets age, they are also likely to develop leaks that can waste as much as 200 gallons of water per day, so replacing a home’s older toilets with new WaterSense® labeled models will deliver significant water savings,” said Heather Moody, water conservation coordinator for the Department of Water Resources.

Water customers who participate in this program can receive a maximum $200 rebate if they replace up to two older, less-efficient toilets with WaterSense® certified toilets. Customers who own or rent a single-family home built in 1993 or earlier may qualify. Details about the program and how to apply are available at www.northgeorgiawater.org or call (404) 463-8645 for more information.
