Millage Rate Talks Continue August 1

The city will have to hold a special meeting to set the millage rate.

Turns out Snellville will have to meet again about the millage rate.

On the advice of the city attorney, Snellville City Council will meet again on August 1 in a special called meeting to set the millage rate, according to officials. The city council at its recent meeting July 11.

At the meeting, city council could not agree on either a 5.7 millage rate or a 5.9 rate. There was notable confusion, with many figures batted about regarding the city's budget.

Council members and citizens were both perplexed, and the vote on the millage rate ended in a statemate. The advice of staff was actually that the city set a 6.19 millage rate, which would mean a tax increase for some residents.

At the Monday meeting, Russell Treadway said the city attorney would be asked whether another meeting needed to be held, or if last fiscal year's millage rate could stand. The millage rate last year was 5.9.

Asked July 13, Treadway said another meeting would be held, and that council members could "bring up any rate they want to as long as it is 6.19 or less."

, it will mean approximately $6.19 per $1,000 of assessed valuation on homes. That's roughly a $30 increase over last year for a home valued at $100,000.
