New Police Equipment, Church and More Approved By Snellville Council

The mayor and council met Monday for its second meeting of the month.

The Snellville City Council and mayor met Monday (Oct. 28) for the second regular meeting of the month.

Here's a recap of the meeting:

-As approved 6-0 by the council and mayor, the Snellville Police Department will receive an upgrade to its existing computer and radio workstations and purchase a third system so that there is a new 911 operator for the city. The council and mayor also approved the Criminal Justice Information Services advanced authentication server and licenses. Councilman Dave Emanuel said much of the funds will probably be reimbursed through the SDS agreement.

-The city council approved 5-1 the conditional use permit for Lifegate International to build a church at 2410 Wisteria Drive, where a vacant gym is located. Mayor Kelly Kautz voted against it, saying that the construction of a church for that area does not follow the overlay district plan, which says that area should be dedicated to education.

-The council and mayor voted 4-2 to appoint Marcy Pharris to Post 6 and Marilyn Swinney to Post 5 on the Snellville Board of Appeals. The mayor and Councilman Mike Sabbagh voted against the motion.

-A senior government class at South Gwinnett High School attended Monday's meeting. The students, along with a local Boy Scout troop, said the pledge of allegiance, and at the end of the meeting, a few students spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting. Two students requested that crosswalks be added to Highway 78 connecting the school to Burger King and Subway; another student asked about the responsibilities of the council and mayor; and another student applauded the city and its police force, saying that he feels safer when his little brother plays with his friends around town.

-The council unanimously approved an amendment to the Home Rule Ordinance concerning the electronic communication for the notification of special meetings.

-The resolution to transmit the city's Short-Term Work program update for 2014-2019 was approved unanimously.

-The mayor gave three proclamations at the meeting: Snellville United Methodist Church celebrating its 130th birthday; a recognition for Pete Pike of Pike Family Nursery; and Global Entrepreneurship Week for Nov. 18-24, 2013.
