New Georgia License Plates Now Available

Registered vehicle owners may choose between traditional plate and a contest-winning design.

Two new Georgia license plates became available Monday.

The Georgia Department of Revenue announced the new, digitally printed plates are available in all 159 counties. Vehicle owners can choose between a traditional plate and a plate designed by Linda Sosebee.

Sosebee's design was selected during a 2011 contest in which more than 500 designs were submitted. . The first vote was discarded .

Will you choose the new design or the traditional plate? Tell us in the comments.

According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, the new tags are less expensive and faster to produce than previous plates. Older plates (those issued prior to Dec. 1, 2003) will gradually be phased out and will be replaced at the time of registration renewal or first-time registration at a county tag office. Plates issued after Dec. 1, 2003 will be phased out beginning in May of 2013.

I think so, too Bruce. Makes my regular one look so...plain.

I think the new one looks terrible. Like something an old grandmother would want on her cadillac. Also, I had not heard anything about still being able to choose a "traditional" plate. Where did you get this info?

Hi Jim - The information was provided by the Georgia Department of Revenue in a May 3 press release.
